Roots and training
Sheikh Nasser Al-Qatami comes from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. He memorised the Qur'an early and began leading prayers as an imam at a very young age. He studied the Islamic sciences at university and immersed himself in recitation and its rules. Like many reciters of his generation, he listened intensively to the great voices before him in his youth and developed his own style from there.
His work
Al-Qatami is the imam and preacher of a mosque in Riyadh. Especially in Ramadan, many people come to pray the tarawih and night prayers behind him. He has recorded the Qur'an, and his recitation has become known in many countries through recordings and broadcasts. He is also involved in initiatives devoted to the Qur'an and its sciences.
His style
Nasser Al-Qatami has a powerful, resonant voice with a very distinctive character. His recitation is melodic and expressive; he moves with great assurance between high and low notes and lets his voice rise at fitting moments to bring out the meaning of a verse. Throughout, he stays clear and precise in his tajweed. His recitation radiates both liveliness and reverence – it wakes you up and touches you. It is a fine example of how a younger generation of imams carries the tradition of recitation forward.
What you can learn from him
Al-Qatami is a good companion when you want to listen to the Qur'an with energy and attention, for example in the morning or on the way to work. As you listen, notice how he highlights certain verses through his melody – often verses that carry an important message. If you read the translation alongside, the link between sound and meaning becomes clear.
His recordings are helpful for memorisation, because his melody is very memorable. Beginners should also use a slower teaching reciter for the more difficult rules of tajweed.
May Allah preserve him and keep using his voice for good.
