Roots and studies

Sheikh Ali Jaber, may Allah have mercy on him, grew up in Saudi Arabia and memorised the Qur'an at a young age. He studied the Islamic sciences, especially jurisprudence (fiqh), and pursued advanced studies. Besides being a reciter, he was therefore also a scholar and a teacher.

Imam of the Sacred Mosque

While still a young man, in the early 1980s, he was appointed imam of the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) in Makkah. For several years he led prayers there, including the tarawih prayers in Ramadan. Many people who prayed in Makkah at that time still associate those years with his voice. Later he led prayers in Jeddah, where, especially in Ramadan, many people came to pray behind him.

He passed away in 2005. For many who had grown up with his recordings from the Sacred Mosque, it was a painful loss.

His style

Ali Jaber's recitation is calm, deep and full of reverence. His voice is dark and warm; he read without hurry and gave every verse its space. His melody is simple, almost held back, and yet very powerful: it is precisely this restraint that lets the text step forward. When you listen to his recordings from the prayers in Makkah, you can feel the stillness and concentration of the worshippers behind him.

What you can learn from him

Ali Jaber is a wonderful model of recitation shaped by humility. When you listen, pay attention to his pace: he takes his time, and so there is room to reflect. For learners, his recordings are good for finding calm in your own reading and reciting the verses consciously and with devotion.

Many reciters of the following generation appreciated his manner and learned from him simply by listening.

May Allah have mercy on him, reward him for every prayer he led in His House, and grant him a high rank in Paradise.
