Doctor and reciter

Sheikh Ahmed Naina was born in 1954 in Kafr el-Sheikh governorate in northern Egypt – a region that has given the world several great reciters. As a child he memorised the Quran and stood out for his voice. His later path is unusual: he studied medicine and became a doctor. For many years he has combined two callings – serving people's health and serving the Book of Allah.

In the spirit of the great school

Naina is seen as an heir of the classical Egyptian school of recitation, especially the style of Sheikh Mustafa Ismail – may Allah have mercy on him – whom he greatly admired. You can hear it in the way he builds melodies, moves between maqamat and shapes single words with great delicacy. Yet his voice is his own: soft, warm and with a refinement that is instantly recognisable.

A reciter for great occasions

Sheikh Naina became a sought-after reciter at official and state occasions in Egypt, and was already invited to such events under President Anwar Sadat. He recites on Egyptian radio and television and has travelled to many countries for Ramadan nights and Quran gatherings.

His style

His art unfolds most clearly in the mujawwad style, the extended, melodically rich form of recitation. He takes his time, repeats verses in different melodies and so lets their meaning shine from several sides. Throughout, his tajweed remains precise – a lovely example that artistry and faithfulness to the rules belong together.

What you can take from him as a learner

  • Listening with patience: mujawwad recordings are slower than murattal. Take a short passage and listen to all of it – you will notice how much is contained in a single verse.
  • Repetition as interpretation: notice which verses he repeats. They are often places of special significance; look up the tafsir for them.
  • Refined pronunciation: his careful shaping of individual sounds is a good model for advanced learners.

A living link

Sheikh Ahmed Naina connects the golden era of Egyptian recitation with the present. When you listen to him, you hear a piece of living tradition. May Allah preserve him and accept his service.
