Read the Quran – even if you don't know a single letter today

This course teaches you to read the Quranic script the way Quran schools have done for generations: first the letters, then their shapes, then the vowel signs – until you read Al-Fatiha and the short surahs yourself. In small five-minute lessons, with exercises, pairs and tests.

Your learning path

How you learn here

  • 1

    Short lessons

Each lesson takes about five minutes: first learning cards, then varied exercises.

  • 2

    Mistakes come back

Whatever you get wrong comes back at the end of the lesson – until it sticks.

  • 3

    Say it out loud

You learn to read with your mouth. Say every sound – where your device has an Arabic voice you can listen to it.

  • 4

    From letters to the Quran

In unit 6 you read real Quran words from Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas – with their meaning. Then you hear them word by word in real recitation and read whole verses. If you can already read a little, start with the placement test.

Some sounds (ح ع ق ص ض ط ظ) are best learned by listening and with a teacher. Listen to a reciter in the player and repeat – the same way Quran schools teach.

The signs of the Quranic script

Vowels, lengthening, doubling and the particular signs of the mushaf – every sign with an example. You practise all of them in units 3 to 5.

  • بَ تَ ثَFatha ـَA small slanted stroke ABOVE the letter. It is read as a short “a”: بَ = ba.
  • بِ تِ ثِKasra ـِA small stroke BELOW the letter. A short “i”: بِ = bi.
  • بُ تُ ثُDamma ـُA small wāw-like hook ABOVE the letter. A short “u”: بُ = bu.
  • بَا بِي بُوThree letters that stretchFatha + alif = long ā (بَا bā), kasra + yā' = long ī (بِي bī), damma + wāw = long ū (بُو bū). Hold the vowel for two counts.
  • بًا بٍ بٌDoubled marksWhen a vowel mark is doubled, an “n” is added: بًا = ban, بٍ = bin, بٌ = bun. Tanwin only appears at the end of a word.
  • قُلْSukun ـْA small circle above the letter: it is pronounced without a vowel and closes the syllable. قُلْ = qul (“say!”).
  • رَبَّShadda ـّThe small “w”-shaped sign doubles the letter: رَبَّ = rab-ba. Say the letter twice – once closing the syllable, once opening the next.
  • ٱلْقَمَرُMoon lettersBefore 14 “moon letters” (e.g. ق ك ح ع) you hear the l: al-qamar. The lām carries a sukun.
  • ٱلشَّمْسُSun lettersBefore 14 “sun letters” (e.g. ش ن ر د) the l disappears and the next letter is doubled (shadda): ash-shams, not al-shams.
  • ٱThe wasla alif ٱThe small sign on the alif means: at the start you say “a”, in the middle of a sentence it is skipped and joined.
  • ةTa marbuta ةA hā' with two dots at the end of a word. Read as “t” when continuing (raḥmatun), as “h” when stopping (raḥmah).
  • ىAlif maqsura ىLooks like a yā' without dots and is read as a long ā: عَلَىٰ = ʿalā.
  • ذَٰلِكَThe small alif ـٰA tiny vertical stroke above the letter – typical of the Quranic script – also means a long ā: ذَٰلِكَ = dhālika.

Where the sounds come from

In tajweed every letter has its point of articulation (makhraj). These four groups help you most at the start:

  • ء ه ع ح غ خ

    From the throat

Six letters come from the throat: ء and ه from its deepest part, ع and ح from the middle, غ and خ from the upper part.

  • ف ب م و

    With the lips

Four letters are formed by the lips: ف with the lower lip and the upper front teeth, ب and م with closed lips, و with rounded lips.

  • خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ

    The heavy letters

Seven letters are always pronounced “heavy” and full (tafkhim), because the back of the tongue rises. Memory aid: «خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ».

  • ا و ي

    The letters of lengthening

ا, و and ي lengthen the vowel before them when they carry no vowel themselves: the long ā, ū and ī. They come from the open space of the mouth and throat (al-jawf).

Every letter at a glance

Name, sound and the three joined forms. Arabic is read from right to left – the form at the start of a word stands on the right.
