Roots and studies
Sheikh Abdullah Basfar comes from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. He memorised the Qur'an and received an ijazah in recitation. At the same time he devoted himself to the academic study of the Islamic sciences and became a lecturer at a university in Jeddah. In him the roles of reciter and teacher come together.
His work
Basfar became known above all through his complete murattal recording of the Qur'an, which is heard in many countries and can be found in countless apps and collections. For many years he has also worked to promote memorisation of the Qur'an, including at an international level. He has also led prayers in mosques in Saudi Arabia and recited at many occasions.
His style
Abdullah Basfar's recitation is clear, even and pleasantly calm. His voice is warm and full, his pace balanced. He avoids elaborate melodic ornament and focuses on delivering every word distinctly and correctly. That is exactly what makes his recording such a reliable companion: you can follow him effortlessly and hear the rules of tajweed cleanly applied. His recording therefore also suits people who do not yet read Arabic fluently: you can go along word by word without losing your place.
What you can learn from him
For learners, especially for hifz, Basfar is an excellent choice. His calm, steady pace invites you to hear verses several times and repeat them. Because his melody is simple, it doesn't distract, and you can concentrate fully on the words and their order. Many teachers recommend clear murattal recordings like his for beginners and for daily revision.
A tip: listen to a short passage first with the translation so you know what it is about, then repeat it several times with his voice. Understanding and memorising then go hand in hand.
