Roots and education
Sheikh Maher Al-Muaiqly comes from Madinah, the city of the Prophet ﷺ, and grew up there near the Prophet's Mosque. He memorised the Qur'an and received an ijazah, a recognised licence of transmission, in recitation. Before he became known as an imam, he worked as a teacher. He later continued his studies in the Islamic sciences, particularly jurisprudence (fiqh), and earned higher academic degrees.
From teacher to imam of the Sacred Mosque
In the mid-2000s he led prayers on Ramadan nights in the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Shortly afterwards he was appointed imam of the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) in Makkah, where he has led prayers and delivered sermons ever since. His recitation in the tarawih prayers, broadcast live from Makkah, made him known throughout the world.
His style
Al-Muaiqly's recitation is marked by a special calm. His voice is soft and clear, the pace measured, the melody restrained and yet very moving. He uses no grand effects; instead he lets the text speak for itself. Many listeners feel a deep inner stillness – especially in verses of mercy and consolation. Add to that clean, unobtrusive tajweed, and he becomes a very reliable model.
His complete murattal recording of the Qur'an is among the most popular in the world and is used in many apps and mosques.
What you can learn from him
For learners, Al-Muaiqly is a wonderful choice. His calm pace leaves enough time to follow every word, and his clear pronunciation makes him easy to imitate. When memorising, his simple, memorable melody helps: many people say that verses stick especially well with his voice.
His recitation is also a reminder that beauty in recitation need not be loud. Listening to him, you learn that humility and calm often carry the Qur'an deepest into the heart.
May Allah preserve him and accept his service at the Sacred Mosque.
