Roots and studies
Sheikh Bandar Baleela comes from Makkah and grew up in the shadow of the Sacred Mosque. He memorised the Qur'an and studied the Islamic sciences at university. Besides his role as an imam he is therefore also active in teaching and scholarship.
Imam of the Sacred Mosque
After making a name for himself as an imam, he was appointed imam of the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) in Makkah in the 2010s. Since then he has led the obligatory prayers there and, in Ramadan, tarawih and night prayers too. For a son of Makkah it is a special honour to stand in the mosque of his home city before people from all over the world and recite the Qur'an.
His style
Baleela's recitation is marked by calm and depth. His voice is dark and warm, his pace measured. He gives the verses room and recites them with a quiet earnestness that invites devotion. His melody is simple and restrained; it never pushes itself forward but accompanies the text. His tajweed is careful and his pronunciation distinct.
Many people value his recitation especially in the long night prayers, when his calm delivery helps them focus completely on the words.
What you can learn from him
Baleela is a good model of calm, focused recitation without haste. If you notice that you speed up when you read, listen to him for a while and then try to continue at his pace. It gives you time for reflection (tadabbur) – exactly what the Qur'an invites us to again and again.
His even delivery also works well for memorisation, because every word can be heard clearly.
Especially in the last nights of Ramadan, when the mosque is full, you can sense how much strength lies in a quiet, collected recitation. His recordings from the prayers let you experience a little of that atmosphere at home.
