A son of Mecca

Sheikh Abdullah ibn Abdul-Ghani Khayyat – may Allah have mercy on him – was a child of Mecca. He grew up in the holy city, learned the Quran there and studied with the scholars who taught in the Sacred Mosque. This environment shaped him deeply: throughout his life he remained bound to the mosque around the Kaaba, as a student, as a teacher and as an imam.

Educator and scholar

Sheikh Khayyat was not only a reciter but also an educator. He worked in his country's education system and taught many students, including people who later took on important roles themselves. He wrote on religious and educational topics and was a member of Saudi Arabia's Council of Senior Scholars. His contemporaries valued him for his learning, his modesty and his sense for what truly matters.

Imam of the Sacred Mosque

For many years Sheikh Khayyat was imam and Friday preacher at the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. At a time when recordings were still rare and precious, his voice became the sound of Mecca for many pilgrims. Some of his prayer recordings have survived and are still listened to with great affection – especially by people who remember the pilgrimages of earlier decades.

His style of recitation

His reading is murattal in the old Hijazi-Meccan style: calm, clear, with a simple melody and great dignity. You hear no effects, just a scholar reciting the word of Allah with reverence. To today's ears it may sound unusually restrained – but that is exactly where its beauty lies.

What you can take from him as a learner

  • Hearing tradition: his recordings let you experience how the Quran was recited in Mecca decades ago and show how much continuity there is in recitation.
  • Dignity over effect: he reminds us that the beauty of recitation comes from the text itself.
  • Knowledge as the foundation: his life shows that leading prayer and learning are inseparable.

Legacy

Sheikh Abdullah Khayyat shaped generations of worshippers, students and scholars. His memory lives on in the hearts of those who prayed behind him or learned from him. May Allah have mercy on him and grant him a lofty home in Paradise.
