Origins and education
Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdullah As-Subayyil – may Allah have mercy on him – came from Al-Bukayriyah in the Qassim region in the heart of Saudi Arabia. In his youth he memorised the Quran and studied the classical Islamic sciences with the scholars of his region. He grew up in an environment where knowledge and recitation belonged closely together – and that union shaped his whole life.
Imam of the Sacred Mosque
From the 1960s onward Sheikh As-Subayyil served as imam and Friday preacher at the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca – for decades. Countless pilgrims who came for Hajj or Umrah prayed behind him. His voice can be heard on many prayer recordings from that era, and for many people it is still bound up with their memories of the Kaaba.
Scholar and leader
Besides leading prayers, he carried great responsibility: for many years he headed the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques and was a member of Saudi Arabia's Council of Senior Scholars. He taught, advised and encouraged young imams. Among them was his son, Sheikh Umar As-Subayyil, who also served as an imam at the Sacred Mosque and passed away before his father – may Allah have mercy on them both.
His style of recitation
As-Subayyil's reading is murattal in the classical style of the Sacred Mosque: calm, dignified, without effects. His voice is earnest and gentle at once, with a slight Najdi colour. You hear a scholar who understands the verses and recites them with reverence – not to impress, but to lead the congregation into prayer.
What you can take from him as a learner
- Dignity and simplicity: his recitation shows that plainness has a beauty of its own.
- Historic recordings: older prayer recordings from Mecca let you experience an era in which many of today's imams found their role models.
- Joining knowledge and recitation: his life encourages you not only to read, but also to learn what you read.
Legacy
Sheikh Muhammad As-Subayyil passed away in 2012. He left behind students, books, recordings and above all the memory of an imam who devoted his life to the House of Allah. May Allah have mercy on him and reward him with the best.
