A teacher from Medina
Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Akhdar is known to many above all as a teacher – one of those scholars who not only recite the Quran beautifully but preserve it, with all its readings, and pass it on. In Medina, the city of the Prophet ﷺ, he taught students for many years, and numerous teachers today trace their learning back to his lessons.
Imam of the Prophet's Mosque
For a number of years Sheikh Al-Akhdar led the congregation as an imam in the Prophet's Mosque. Recordings from that time are still loved today because they have a very pure, unhurried sound: here is someone who knows the text down to the smallest detail and approaches it with deep reverence.
A master of the readings
He is especially respected for his knowledge of the Qira'at, the transmitted readings of the Quran. This science requires years of study with teachers who hold an unbroken chain of transmission (sanad) going back to the Prophet ﷺ. In Medina, Sheikh Al-Akhdar is regarded as a recognised authority in this field and has granted many students an ijazah (licence to teach).
His style of recitation
His reading is murattal with a classical Hijazi sound: calm, with precise elongations and very clean letters. He avoids effects. That is exactly why his recitation is such a good model – you hear what tajweed sounds like when it is not decoration but second nature.
What you can learn from him
- Precision: listen for the exact length of the elongations (madd) and for the ghunnah (nasalisation). He is very consistent here.
- Respect for transmission: his path shows that the Quran is handed down from person to person – a gentle nudge to find a teacher yourself.
- Calm repetition: his recordings are well suited for listening to a passage several times and reciting along.
A quiet legacy
Not every great servant of the Quran is a star. Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Akhdar stands for the many teachers who work in the background to keep recitation pure and alive. May Allah reward him for all the knowledge he has passed on.
