Quran Masterclass · learning method

The Shams Method

A way to learn the Quran so that it stays: every verse is heard, spoken, understood, explained, recalled from memory and connected to your life – in seven steps and about four minutes. What language-learning and memory research knows about remembering, joined with the way Quran teachers have taught for centuries.

Why “Shams”?

“Shams” – شمس – is the Arabic word for the sun. It is also the family name of Nami Shams, who developed the method. And it describes how learning is meant here: the sun rises every morning, not once a year with full force. It is punctual, patient and steady – and that is exactly why it makes everything grow. This is how the Quran should enter your life: a little light every day, at the right time, until many days become a whole life with the word of Allah. The Quran itself swears by the sun and calls it a light that Allah has made – a reminder that all light comes from Him, the light of knowledge too.

  • وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا

By the sun and its morning brightness.

    91:1

  • هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا

It is He who made the sun a shining radiance and the moon a light.

    10:5

Why so many people give up learning the Quran

  1. Learned – and forgotten a week later

Without planned review a verse fades quickly. Whoever only learns new verses loses the old ones.

  2. Sound without meaning

Many can recite verses but don't know what they say. What you don't understand is harder to remember and touches the heart less.

  3. No system, no daily goal

One surah today, nothing next week. Without a fixed routine there is no progress – and with it goes the motivation.

The solution in one sentence
The Shams Method gives every verse the same fixed path – sound before meaning, meaning before memory, memory before reflection – and a memory model brings every learned verse back exactly when it is about to fade.

The seven steps in detail

Every step has one clear task. Together they take about four minutes per verse. The platform guides you through each of them – you don't need to prepare anything.

  1. Dengarkan

    Time: about 45 seconds

    Input before output

You listen to the verse three times in a row and follow the Arabic text. No translation, no speaking yet – just listening and looking.

    Why it works+

Whoever learns a language hears it first. Repeated listening builds an inner sound image: rhythm, pauses and melody are already familiar before you speak yourself. That clearly reduces mistakes when you first recite.

What the platform does for you

Playback repeats the verse automatically and highlights the word being recited. Children and seniors hear it five or four times, at a calmer pace.

  2. Susun dari belakang

    Time: about 60 seconds

    Backchaining

The verse is built up from the end: first only the last word, then the last two, then the last three – up to the whole verse. You speak along each time.

    Why it works+

This technique is called backchaining and is used in language teaching for long sentences. Because every repetition ends on the part you know best, the melody stays natural and you don't stumble at the end. The verse grows together as one unit instead of a chain of single words.

What the platform does for you

This is only possible because the platform knows exactly when each word is recited. It plays the verse from any word to the end and greys out the words not practised yet.

  3. Kata per kata

    Time: about 30 seconds

    Chunking

You go through the verse word by word: Arabic word, transliteration, meaning.

    Why it works+

Memory stores small, meaningful units more easily than long chains (chunking). When every word has a meaning, sounds become language.

What the platform does for you

Meaning and transliteration appear right under each word. You can strengthen common words later in the vocabulary trainer.

  4. Makna & pengait ingatan

    Time: about 40 seconds

    Dual coding · mnemonics

You read the translation of the whole verse and use the memory hooks: the anchor word, the rhyme at the end of the verse, the bridge to the next verse – and write your own mnemonic if you like.

    Why it works+

Meaning is the strongest memory anchor. On top come cues hidden in the text itself: many verses of a surah end on the same sound, and most mistakes happen at the transition from one verse to the next.

What the platform does for you

Anchor word, rhyme and transition are found automatically for every verse. Your own mnemonics are saved in your account.

  5. Tafsir

    Time: about 45 seconds

    Elaboration

You read the classical explanation: context, occasion of revelation and what the scholars teach about it.

    Why it works+

Whoever knows why a verse was revealed and what it answers understands it more deeply – and remembers it like a story, not like a list of words.

What the platform does for you

Tafsir from recognised works, always with its source. The Shams Method does not create its own interpretation.

  6. Petunjuk yang memudar

    Time: about 40 seconds

    Retrieval practice · fading cues

The words disappear in stages: first you only see the first letter of each word, then nothing at all. You recite from memory, reveal and rate yourself honestly.

    Why it works+

Active recall strengthens knowledge far more than reading again. The cues are taken away step by step on purpose – just enough help for you to find the word yourself.

What the platform does for you

Your rating goes straight into your personal memory model: the verse comes back for review at the right time.

  7. Renungkan

    Time: about 30 seconds

    Tadabbur

You write one or two sentences: What does this verse tell me about Allah? About me? What will I take with me today?

    Why it works+

Allah says: “A blessed Book which We have revealed to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses” (38:29). Reflection (tadabbur) connects the verse to your life – and what is personally meaningful stays the longest.

What the platform does for you

Your notes are saved in your account and shown again at every review.

One verse, four stages

Mula-mula kamu hanya melihat huruf pertama setiap kata – bacalah ayat dengan petunjuk ini. Lalu petunjuknya pun menghilang. Tampilkan ayatnya dan nilailah dirimu dengan jujur; ayat itu akan kembali untuk murajaah pada waktu yang tepat.

Mulai dengan Al-Fatihah

One verse, four stages · 1:2

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Rooted in the tradition of the hifz schools

None of the seven steps is a whim. Each has a root in the way Muslims have passed on the Quran for centuries – the Shams Method puts them into a fixed order and onto your phone.

  • تَلَقِّي

    Talaqqi – listening first

The Quran is passed on from mouth to ear: the student hears the verse from the teacher before speaking it. That is why every verse here begins with listening three times – and why we recommend reciting to a teacher as well.

  • لَوْح

    Lawh – the writing tablet

In many Quran schools of West Africa and the Maghreb, students still write their passage on a wooden tablet, learn it by heart and then wash the tablet clean. The text disappears, the memory stays – the same idea lives in the fading cues of step 6.

  • سَبَق · سَبْقِي · مَنْزِل

    Sabaq, sabqi, manzil

Many hifz schools divide each day into three parts: the new lesson (sabaq), the verses of the last few days (sabqi) and the review of older portions (manzil). The memory model of the Shams Method plans the same three levels – and adapts the gaps to you.

  • عَشْرُ آيَات

Ten verses – with knowledge and action

It is reported of Companions such as Ibn Mas'ud that they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ and only moved on once they knew the knowledge and the action contained in them (narrated by at-Tabari). That is why meaning, tafsir and reflection belong to every verse.

Mengapa metode ini berhasil

The Shams Method does not reinvent learning. It arranges well-known, well-studied principles of learning and memory research so that every verse passes through them in order – from the first listening to the review months later.

Why reviewing at the right time decides everything

Without review, remembering drops quickly. Every review at the right moment flattens the curve – and the gap until the next review grows. The Shams Method reviews every verse after about 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90 days – and adapts these gaps to you.

1371430daysrememberingwith reviewwithout review
Schematic illustration of the principle, not measured data.

Going deeper: how repetition really works

The curve above is not a trick but one of the best-documented findings of memory research: what we learn fades along a predictable curve – and every review at the right moment makes the next curve flatter. Four things follow from this that every Quran student should know.

  1. Repeating non-stop feels good – and lasts the shortest

Recite a verse fifty times in a row one evening and you will know it perfectly that hour. By next morning much of it is gone. The reason: repetitions right after each other meet a memory that is still completely fresh. The brain does not have to work, so it stores nothing new. Researchers call this massed practice. It creates a feeling of certainty but little lasting trace.

  2. The right effort: just before it is gone

The strongest memory is formed when you have to recall a verse that has almost faded – and you just manage it. That small effort is the signal to your brain: “This matters, keep it longer.” That is why every verse here comes back after about a day, then after three, seven, fourteen, thirty and ninety days. Each time you succeed the gap grows; each time you miss, it shrinks.

  3. Where non-stop repetition still belongs

Non-stop repetition is not useless – it simply has a different job: the first encoding. In the first minutes with a new verse you need density: listen three times, build it backwards, recite with cues. That is exactly what the Shams Method does in steps 1 to 6. And hifz schools have known for centuries that this dense encoding must be followed by a daily review of the old – sabaq, sabqi, manzil: today's new, the new of recent days, and a portion of the old. The method joins both: dense at the start, then stretched.

  4. Understanding what is meant is the strongest glue

A verse you know only as a chain of sounds has one path into your memory. A verse whose words you know, whose context you have read and about which you have thought for one sentence has four paths – and if one breaks, the others hold. That is why word-by-word, tafsir and reflection sit in the middle of the method, not as an extra at the end. Whoever understands forgets more slowly, and whoever forgets finds the verse again through its meaning.

The review ladder

This is how a verse you learn today travels through the coming months – if you succeed each time.

day 01.day 12.day 33.day 74.day 145.day 306.day 90

Six reviews in three months are enough for a verse to sit firmly – if they come at the right time. Fifty repetitions in one evening are not.

4 · 3 · 2 – becoming fluent

A technique from language teaching that suits recitation once a passage basically sits: recite the same passage three times in a row – and give yourself less time each round.

  1. 4 minutes

Slowly, with the mushaf or cues, everything correct – tajweed before tempo.
  2. 3 minutes

The same passage without help, mark mistakes briefly, do not stop.
  3. 2 minutes

Once more, at a reciter's pace. Now the melody carries the text.

The shrinking time forces you to stop thinking word by word and to think in units of meaning – the way reciters do. Use the playback speed in the player: 0.75× for the first round, 1× for the second, 1.25× for the third.

What “understanding” means here

Not becoming a scholar – but knowing, while you recite, what the verse is about. Three questions are enough: Who is speaking to whom? What is promised, commanded or told? What does it change about my day today? If you can answer these three in one sentence, you have understood the verse – and you will no longer confuse it with another that sounds similar.

Rule of thumb: learn densely, review spaced out, anchor with meaning.

A method that gets to know you

  • Personal memory factor

Every verse gets its own factor. If it is hard for you, it comes back sooner; if it is easy, later. No two learners have the same plan.

  • Mistakes count

Every mistake in an Academy test brings the verse back the next day. Your weakest verses are shown to you first.

  • Adapted to your age

Children and seniors get a calmer pace, more repetitions and more time in tests. The recommended plan follows your age.

  • Growing daily amount

Your 365-day plan starts small and adds a little every week – from a gentle start to the hafiz track with the whole Quran in about one year.

Harimu bersama Metode Shams

Lima belas hingga dua puluh lima menit yang fokus setiap hari lebih baik daripada satu sesi panjang seminggu sekali. Setiap hari memiliki empat bagian yang sama:

  1. 1

    Murajaah dulu (5 menit)

Mulailah dengan ayat-ayat yang jatuh tempo hari ini. Mengingatnya kembali dari hafalan sebelum mempelajari hal baru itulah yang memindahkannya ke ingatan jangka panjang.

  2. 2

Ayat baru dalam tujuh langkah (sekitar 4 menit per ayat)

Ambil porsi harianmu – bagi kebanyakan orang tiga ayat baru – melalui dengarkan, tirukan, kata-kata, makna, tafsir, ingat kembali, dan renungkan.

  3. 3

    Sambungkan rantainya (3 menit)

Bacalah ayat-ayat baru hari ini bersama ayat-ayat kemarin, tanpa melihat. Ini menyambungkan ayat-ayat menjadi satu bagian, seperti yang dilakukan para guru tahfizh klasik dengan sabaq dan sabqi.

  4. 4

    Dengarkan sebelum tidur (2 menit)

Putar sekali lagi ayat-ayat hari ini pada malam hari. Apa yang kamu ulang sesaat sebelum tidur akan dimantapkan selama malam.

Berapa banyak per hari?

Jumlah yang tepat adalah jumlah yang bisa kamu pertahankan setiap hari. Rekomendasi kami:

  • Pemula: 1–3 ayat baru sehari
  • Dengan sedikit latihan: 3–5 ayat baru
  • Intensif: 5–10 ayat baru ditambah murajaah yang lebih panjang

Murajaah bertambah dengan setiap ayat yang kamu pelajari, jadi porsi kecil yang konsisten lebih baik daripada awal yang besar tetapi tidak bisa kamu pertahankan.

The Quran has always been passed on from mouth to ear (talaqqi). The Shams Method does not replace a teacher – it makes sure you practise every day and come to your teacher well prepared.

For teachers, mosques and schools

The Shams Method also works in class. A suggestion for a 45-minute lesson with a group:

  1. 5 min

    Review

The group recites the verses of the last lesson together, then individual students.

  2. 5 min

    Listen

The new passage is played three times or recited by the teacher; everyone follows in the text.

  3. 10 min

    Backward build-up in chorus

Teacher and class build each verse up from the last word – first together, then in small groups.

  4. 10 min

    Meaning and tafsir

Key words, the translation and a short explanation of the context.

  5. 10 min

    Recall in pairs

One student recites with first letters, then without help; the partner checks in the text.

  6. 5 min

    Reflection

Everyone shares one thought about the verse. Homework: review daily in the Academy.

Schools and mosques can use the platform for free. Write to info@quranmasterclass.com if you would like to use the method with your group.

    Shahih al-Bukhari 4937; Shahih Muslim 798
  • “Dan sungguh, telah Kami mudahkan Quran untuk peringatan, maka adakah orang yang mau mengambil pelajaran?”
    Quran 54:17

Itulah sebabnya Quran Masterclass gratis – dan itulah sebabnya Metode Shams ada: agar tidak seorang pun harus menunda pembelajaran terpenting dalam hidupnya.

The method explained in depth

The full background: where each step comes from, how it works and how to bring it into your daily life.

The Shams Method is a way of learning the Quran verse by verse, developed by Nami Shams in Dubai. It brings together the hifz tradition and well-established findings from language learning and memory research into one fixed path: seven short steps per verse, about four minutes each, followed by spaced review.

This article explains every step and the learning principle behind it. If you just want to try it, open the Shams Method in the app and start with Al-Fatiha.

What the Shams Method is – and what it is not

The Shams Method is a learning method, not a new interpretation of the Quran. All explanations shown in the app come from classical tafsir works and are always displayed with their source. For religious questions, please ask a qualified scholar.

None of its building blocks are new on their own. Listening before reciting, repetition and revision are as old as Quran teaching itself. What is new is how they are combined and timed, and that the app can guide you through them for every verse of the Quran.

The seven steps at a glance

  1. Listen – three times, eyes on the Arabic text.
  2. Build up backwards – from the last word to the whole verse.
  3. Word by word – each word with its meaning.
  4. Meaning – the translation of the whole verse.
  5. Tafsir – the classical explanation with its source.
  6. Fading cues – first letters only, then nothing.
  7. Reflect – one or two sentences in your own words.

Step 1: Listen – input before output

What you do

Play the verse three times while following the Arabic text. Do not translate yet. Let the sound, rhythm and melody settle.

Why it works

Children learn their first language by hearing it for a long time before speaking. Language teachers call this "input before output". When you try to recite a verse you have never properly heard, you have nothing to compare your own voice with. Repeated listening builds a clear sound image first – and that image guides your recitation later.

Step 2: Build up backwards – backchaining

What you do

The app plays only the last word of the verse; you repeat it. Then the last two words, then the last three – until you are reciting the whole verse. Every round ends on the part you already know.

Why it works

Teachers of long sentences in foreign languages often use backward build-up, also called backchaining. Starting from the end means every repetition finishes on familiar ground. That keeps the melody natural, prevents the common problem of a strong beginning and a shaky ending, and lets the verse hold together as one unit.

This step is only possible because Quran Masterclass knows the exact moment each word is recited. It can start playback at any word and stop at the end of the verse – something a plain audio file cannot do.

Step 3: Word by word – chunking

What you do

Go through the verse word by word and look at each meaning.

Why it works

Working memory holds only a small number of items at once. Grouping information into meaningful chunks makes it manageable. A word with a known meaning is one chunk; a verse built from known words is far easier to hold than a string of unfamiliar sounds. Over time, recurring words become familiar – see our guide on Quranic vocabulary and roots.

Step 4: Meaning – dual coding

What you do

Read the translation of the whole verse and notice how the words you just met come together into one message.

Why it works

Dual coding theory describes how information stored in more than one form – for example sound and meaning, or text and image – is easier to recall. In the Shams Method, the Arabic script, the recitation, the transliteration and the meaning are all linked. Several paths into memory make it more likely that one of them will bring the verse back when you need it.

Step 5: Tafsir – depth and context

What you do

Read the classical explanation of the verse: its context, the reason of revelation where known, and what scholars teach about it. The source is shown below the text.

Why it works

We remember what we understand and find meaningful far better than isolated facts. Tafsir connects the verse to a story, a situation and a lesson. It also protects you from reading your own assumptions into a verse. Learn more in Understanding the Quran with tafsir.

Step 6: Fading cues – retrieval practice

What you do

First you see only the first letter of each word and recite the verse with these cues. Then the cues disappear as well. Reveal the verse and rate yourself honestly.

Why it works

Two well-known principles meet here. Retrieval practice – actively recalling something from memory – strengthens it much more than reading it again. Fading cues (sometimes called vanishing cues) give just enough help to recall a word yourself and then take that help away step by step. The first letter is a small nudge, not the answer, so your memory still has to do the work.

Your honest rating decides when the verse returns. That brings us to spacing.

Spaced repetition

After step six, every verse enters a review schedule: 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90 days. If you recall it, the gap grows. If you struggle, it starts again from the first stage.

The spacing effect has been studied since the nineteenth century and is one of the most reliable findings in memory research: reviews spread over growing intervals lead to longer-lasting memory than the same number of repetitions crammed together. Your Today page shows which verses are due.

Step 7: Reflect – tadabbur

What you do

Write one or two sentences in your note. Three questions help:

  • What does this verse tell me about Allah?
  • What does it say about me and my life?
  • What will I take with me today?

Why it works

Allah describes the Quran as "a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, that they might reflect upon its verses" 38:29. Reflection (tadabbur) is part of the purpose of recitation itself. It also helps memory: content that is connected to your own life and feelings is remembered longest.

The daily routine

The seven steps are embedded in a simple day:

  1. Review first (about 5 min) – the verses due today.
  2. New verses (about 4 min per verse) – for most people three.
  3. Link the chain (about 3 min) – today's verses together with yesterday's, without looking, like the sabaq and sabqi of classical hifz.
  4. Listen before sleep (about 2 min) – what you go over before sleep tends to be consolidated overnight.

How much is right? Beginners: 1–3 new verses a day. With practice: 3–5. Intensive: 5–10 plus longer review. The amount you can keep up daily is the right one. See the full daily Quran routine.

Who is the Shams Method for?

  • Beginners who cannot read Arabic yet – transliteration and word meanings help from the first verse.
  • Learners who forget what they memorised – the review schedule addresses exactly that.
  • Parents and children – combined with kids mode, short surahs become playful.
  • Hifz students – as a structured way to prepare the daily sabaq before reciting to a teacher.

Pertanyaan tentang Metode Shams

What is the Shams Method?

A learning method with seven steps per verse, developed by Nami Shams: listen, build up backwards, word by word, meaning and memory hooks, tafsir, fading cues and reflection – with a memory model that plans the reviews. It is free at Quran Masterclass.

What is new about it?

The individual building blocks come from language-learning and memory research and from the hifz tradition. New is their fixed order per verse and the implementation with exact word timings: building up backwards from any word and fading the text in stages down to the first letters – combined with a personal review plan.

How many verses should I learn per day?

Beginners one to three new verses a day plus the review that is due, with practice three to five. In the 365-day plan the amount grows week by week. The right amount is the one you can keep up every day.

Do I need to know Arabic?

No. Transliteration and word-by-word meaning help you from the first verse. Over time you recognise letters and words on your own – the vocabulary trainer speeds this up.

Is the Shams Method suitable for children?

Yes. For children the pace is calmer, the verse is heard more often and tests give more time. Kids mode shows large text and rewards. Children learn best together with a parent.

Does the method replace a teacher?

No. For correct pronunciation, reciting to a qualified teacher is strongly recommended. The Shams Method makes sure you practise every day and arrive well prepared.

Is the Shams Method a new tafsir?

No. It is a learning method. All explanations come from classical tafsir works and are shown with their source. For religious questions, please ask a qualified scholar.

What does the Shams Method cost?

Nothing. Quran Masterclass is free. You only need an account so that your progress is saved on all your devices.

Metode Shams adalah cara belajar, bukan penafsiran baru terhadap Quran. Semua penjelasan berasal dari kitab-kitab tafsir klasik dan ditampilkan beserta sumbernya. Untuk pertanyaan keagamaan, silakan bertanya kepada ulama yang berkompeten.
