Roots
Sheikh Yasser Al-Dosari comes from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. He memorised the Qur'an at a young age and studied the Islamic sciences. Early on he led prayers in mosques in his home city, and word of his voice spread quickly: especially in Ramadan, many people came to pray behind him.
Imam of the Sacred Mosque
After years as an imam in Riyadh, he was appointed imam of the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) in Makkah in 2019. Since then he has led prayers there, including tarawih and night prayers in Ramadan. Through the broadcasts from Makkah his voice is now known worldwide, and short clips of his recitation are shared and listened to by countless people.
His style
Al-Dosari's recitation is warm, full and deeply felt. His voice has a soft, deep sound, and he uses melody with great sensitivity. Characteristic are his flowing transitions and the way he lets the ends of verses fade gently. Many listeners say his recitation brings them especially to reflection: it is beautiful, but that beauty always leads back to the meaning of the text.
At the same time his tajweed is careful and his pronunciation distinct, so it is easy to follow along on the page.
What you can learn from him
Al-Dosari is a lovely companion for anyone who wants not only to learn the Qur'an but to learn to love it. When you listen, notice how he stresses or repeats certain verses – often verses about Allah's mercy, Paradise or the return to Him. It can help you pause more consciously when you read yourself.
His recordings work well for memorisation because his melody is catchy and stays in the memory. Beginners should keep a slower teaching reciter at hand for difficult tajweed points.
