From the Delta

Sheikh Ragheb Mustafa Ghalwash – may Allah have mercy on him – came from Egypt's Nile Delta, the fertile region that has given Egypt so many great reciters. As was the tradition there, he memorised the Quran as a child in the kuttab, and his voice was noticed early. Already as a young man he was invited to celebrations and religious occasions and made a name for himself in his home region.

A radio reciter

Sheikh Ghalwash was accepted as a reciter on Egyptian radio in the 1960s, joining the generation that carried forward the tradition of the great mid-century masters. For decades his voice was heard on the radio, in Friday broadcasts and in great mosques. He travelled to many countries to recite on Ramadan nights and at gatherings.

His style

Ghalwash's voice was deep, full and powerful – a voice that could fill a large space effortlessly. In mujawwad he shaped the verses with dignity and gravity; he commanded the maqamat and used them thoughtfully, without sacrificing the clarity of the words. Many listeners valued that his recitation was at once solemn and grounded: artful, but never aloof. His murattal recordings are also still listened to.

What you can take from him as a learner

  • The low register: if your own voice is on the deeper side, he can show you how much beauty and expression a low register allows.
  • Solemnity: notice how he brings calm and weight into his voice in verses about the greatness of Allah.
  • Getting to know the Egyptian school: he is an important voice of the generation after the great masters – helpful for understanding how Egyptian recitation developed.

Legacy

Sheikh Ragheb Mustafa Ghalwash devoted his life to reciting the Quran and reached people in Egypt and beyond for decades. His recordings preserve a voice many have not forgotten. May Allah have mercy on him and count him among those for whom the Quran will intercede on the Day of Resurrection.
