Roots and training

Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, may Allah have mercy on him, was born in 1905 in Egypt's Nile Delta, in the area of Tanta. As was usual in Egyptian villages at the time, he learned the Qur'an in the kuttab, the traditional Qur'an school, and had memorised it completely while still young. In Tanta, a city with a long tradition of recitation, he deepened his knowledge of tajweed and the readings.

His work

His reputation first spread through the Delta and then reached Cairo. There he quickly became one of the best-known voices in the country; he recited on Egyptian radio, at major occasions and in the great mosques. Later he travelled to many countries to recite. A large number of live recordings of his recitations have survived and are still listened to with great love.

What distinguishes his style

Mustafa Ismail is regarded as one of the reciters who handled the art of the maqamat – the melodic modes – with particular subtlety. He moved between them with great naturalness and let the melody follow the meaning of the verses: in verses of hope his voice brightens, in verses of warning it becomes serious and urgent. His recitation never sounds rehearsed; it feels alive, as if it were taking shape in the moment.

Alongside this comes very precise tajweed. For him the beauty of the voice never stood above the rules of recitation – the two went hand in hand.

What you can learn from him

For beginners who are still learning the basic rules, a murattal reciter is usually the better first choice. But if you already have some experience, there is a lot to discover in Mustafa Ismail: listen to how he repeats a verse and stresses it differently the second time, how he lets the sound follow the meaning. It sharpens your sense that recitation should be not only correct but also thoughtful and from the heart.

He passed away in 1978. His recordings are a treasure of the Egyptian school of recitation, and many later reciters learned from him simply by listening.
