An imam from Riyadh
Sheikh Khalid Al-Jalil is a Saudi imam from Riyadh who has become known far beyond his city in recent years. Especially in Ramadan, during the Tarawih and night prayers, many people come to his mosque to pray behind him. Recordings of these prayers are listened to and shared throughout the Muslim world.
The sound of his recitation
Al-Jalil's voice is deep, full and earnest, with a reflective colour. He recites in the murattal style, calm and even, yet with great emotional density. In verses about death, the Hereafter and the meeting with Allah his voice becomes particularly penetrating, and many listeners experience his recitation as an invitation to look within. His melodies are simple and wholly serve the text.
The imam of a community
Like many Saudi imams, Sheikh Al-Jalil sees his task above all as leading the congregation in prayer. He owes his renown not to big appearances but to nights in the mosque when people stand together, listen and pray. That atmosphere can be felt in his recordings too: you hear not just a reciter but a praying community.
What you can take from him as a learner
- Listening with the heart: choose a passage about the Hereafter, for example from Surah Al-Qiyamah or Surah An-Naba', and listen to it in his recitation. Then read the tafsir and listen once more.
- Deep voice, clear letters: notice how distinctly he articulates despite his low register – helpful for anyone whose own voice is on the deeper side.
- Preparing for Ramadan: his Tarawih recordings can help you get inwardly ready for the night prayers.
What remains
Sheikh Khalid Al-Jalil shows that the Quran still draws people to the mosques in great numbers when it is recited with sincerity. May Allah preserve him, grant him sincerity and make his recitation a reason for many hearts to find their way back to Him.
