A scholar at the prayer niche
Sheikh Abdul Muhsin Al-Qasim has for many years been one of the imams and Friday preachers of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. Anyone who has prayed there knows his voice: clear, composed and with a quiet authority that comes from knowledge, not volume.
Knowledge and the judiciary
Sheikh Al-Qasim is a man of the Islamic sciences. He studied Islamic law and has served as a judge in Medina. This combination of legal scholarship and responsibility can also be felt in his sermons: they are clearly structured, well grounded and practical.
The responsibility of an imam in Medina
Praying in the Prophet's Mosque means standing where the Prophet ﷺ himself prayed and taught. Whoever leads the prayer there carries a special responsibility: pilgrims from every country, with every language and every level of knowledge, stand behind him. A recitation that is dignified and clear for everyone is, in this place, a service to the whole Ummah.
His way of reciting
Al-Qasim's recitation is murattal at a calm, even pace. His voice is deep and distinct; he articulates every word carefully and places his pauses so that the meaning stands out. He largely avoids elaborate melodic turns. This makes his reading sober yet devout – you feel as though you are listening to a teacher who opens up the text sentence by sentence.
What you can take from him as a learner
- Clear articulation: his careful pronunciation is a good model for the makharij and sifat (characteristics of the letters).
- Meaningful pauses: listen to where he stops. It trains your sense of waqf and ibtida'.
- Understanding while listening: his reading is ideal for following the translation at the same time – the pace leaves room for it.
What remains
Sheikh Abdul Muhsin Al-Qasim shows how leading prayer, scholarship and recitation strengthen one another. In a time when so much is fast and loud, his voice stands for clarity and calm. May Allah preserve him and accept his service at the Prophet's Mosque.
