Roots and childhood

Sheikh Mohamed Siddiq Al-Minshawi, may Allah have mercy on him, was born in 1920 in Upper Egypt, in the region of Sohag. He grew up in a family of Qur'an reciters: his father, Sheikh Siddiq Al-Minshawi, was himself a well-known qari. So Mohamed heard the Qur'an from his earliest days, memorised it young, and was raised, in a sense, inside the art of recitation.

His path

His voice soon became known far beyond his home region. He recited on Egyptian radio and, by invitation, in many countries. Al-Minshawi left complete recordings of the Qur'an both in the calm murattal style and in the solemn, ornamented mujawwad style. He also recorded a Mushaf Mu'allim, in which children repeat his recitation passage by passage – a recording that has helped many families learn together.

He passed away in 1969, not yet fifty years old. Yet in those few decades his voice left a trace that has not faded to this day.

What makes his recitation special

Anyone who hears Al-Minshawi for the first time notices something at once: a quiet sorrow, a humility, as if he were reading every word for himself while standing before his Lord. That reverence (khushu') is the heart of his recitation. His voice is warm, slightly melancholic and very clear. In verses about the Judgement and about mercy it becomes especially moving, without ever turning theatrical. At the same time his tajweed is clean and reliable.

What you can take from him

Al-Minshawi teaches not only how to read but with what heart. Listen to him when you want to open yourself to the meaning of a verse: follow the translation, let his pauses sink in, and notice how he shapes the sound to the content. His murattal is good for following along and repeating; his mujawwad is perfect for quiet moments when you simply want to listen.

Many people say that his voice was the first to make them weep over the Qur'an. May Allah reward him for it with Paradise.
